Teen Spotlights

Teen Spotlight: Virginia Williams

stats: 18, Senior at Saint James School

notable: Key Club Member, Track and Field Team Member, Cross-Country Team Member

quotable: “Have courage and be kind.”

her story: Virginia has a part in just about every type of organization Saint James offers. She is a member of the key club, National Honor Society, tea club, and the track and cross country teams. Virginia’s favorite part about attending STJ is the “love the teachers and coaches, and the help and support they give.” When asked to share something most people don’t know about her, Virginia responded, “I love art!” Not only does she love art, but she’s also great at it— she recently won a silver key for her printmaking at the 2019 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards competition. Outside of school, Virginia is a member of Bridge Builders of Alabama, a program that provides leadership programs for high school students. She offered this advice to other teens: “If you want something, you have to reach for it—no one is going to get it for you.”

what’s next: Virginia wants to become an industrial designer and design running shoes. She explained, “Both of my parents are architects, so I’ve been around design for a long time. I also really enjoy creating art and want a creative career that will support me.”

PG (parental guidance) rating: “I love how supportive my parents are. They always make it to my games or track meets and push me to be the best that I can be.”

parents’ perspective: Ray and Katie are proud of “Virginia’s willingness to try different sports activities, volunteer activities, and academic classes.” They added, “She is very athletic and determined to succeed in everything she tries.”

parent-to-parent: “Expose your kids to as many activities as possible when they are young because you never know what they will later reflect back upon for guidance and wisdom.”
